During the first eight months of this year, the Kingdom of Morocco imported about 660,000 tons of Russian agricultural products valued at 147 million US dollars, according to the Federal Center for Agricultural Exports Development under the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.
The same source stated that Russia supplied Morocco with agricultural products worth about 280 million dollars last year, while it imported 182 million dollars from Morocco.
According to previous estimates by Russian experts, the value of Russian agricultural exports to Morocco tripled last year, with wheat shipments to this Maghreb country increasing 3.4 times in value, making Russia one of the major wheat suppliers to the Kingdom, surpassing France thanks to competitive prices and high quality.
According to data from the Russian Federal Center for Agricultural Exports Development, the potential volume of Russian agricultural product supplies to Morocco is estimated at about 350 million dollars, including grains, vegetable oils, sugar production residues (beet and sweets), beef, and other agricultural products.
Yegor Pavinsky, Head of Agricultural Market Analysis at Rus Agrotrans, said, “Morocco suffers from climate changes and consecutive years of drought, which led to a significant decrease in agricultural yields and thus increased imports.”
He added, “Russia’s exports to Morocco from July to January of the 2024/2025 season have already reached a record level of 930,000 tons, exceeding the volume of all previous seasons,” explaining that “the majority of imports include state-supported wheat, in addition to Morocco’s durum wheat imports ranging between 1 million and 1.5 million tons, which Russia can successfully develop.”
He also pointed out that “there are opportunities to expand Russian barley exports to the Moroccan market, as local barley production is declining. Last season, Morocco imported 1.4 million tons, of which only 170,000 tons were Russian barley, and no supplies were made this season.”
Meanwhile, Mikhail Maltsev, Executive Director of the Russian Union of Oils and Fats, confirmed that “Russia resumed, after many years, the supply of oils and fats products to Morocco. Generally, North African markets, especially Morocco, have potential to increase exports of Russian oil products, as these countries heavily rely on importing vegetable oils, and Russia can offer high-quality products at attractive prices.”
