Iraq’s Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel met with his Jordanian counterpart Saleh Al-Kharabsheh to review plans for the triangular energy linkage between Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt, and to develop mechanisms for electricity exchange that serve both national and regional power systems.
The two sides discussed at the ministry headquarters the latest updates on the Iraqi-Jordanian-Egyptian electrical interconnection project and the technical and regulatory measures needed to support network reliability and maximize mutual benefits. Fadel emphasized the deep bilateral relations between Iraq and Jordan and the importance of building on regional integration opportunities in the renewable energy sector. He also pointed to plans to increase the capacity of the electrical interconnection line with Jordan towards the Al-Qaim border crossing to enhance the stability of the power system in western Iraq.
Al-Kharabsheh confirmed that the electrical linkage is not limited to exporting energy to Iraq but includes energy exchange based on the needs of both systems, achieving shared interests. He highlighted the involvement of Jordanian companies in renewable energy projects inside Iraq to strengthen investment partnerships and transfer technology and expertise.
Fadel welcomed this approach, noting that the ministry provides transparent and competitive investment opportunities in renewable energies to increase clean energy production and improve the efficiency of transmission and distribution systems.
Previously, Fadel revealed new investment opportunities in renewable energy exceeding 10,000 megawatts. He stated that the government has begun implementing these plans, which represent investments worth around 6 billion dollars, with total investment rates expected to reach about 10 billion dollars to enhance the electrical system.
Meanwhile, Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade, Amer Al-Bassat, confirmed that memorandums of understanding between Iraq and Lebanon represent a strategic step to develop commercial and investment cooperation. He noted the joint Iraqi-Lebanese committee’s efforts to restore historical relations, simplify customs procedures, facilitate truck entry, and enhance cooperation in oil, cables, and joint industrial projects.
He pointed out that directives from the Iraqi Prime Minister, the Minister of Trade, and the Lebanese Prime Minister aim to expedite the implementation of the memorandums within a few weeks to ensure tangible results on the ground.
