EU leaders called for a tripartite summit to discuss establishing peace in Ukraine and ending the war, affirming their support for US President Donald Trump’s efforts to reach a peace agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine. According to a statement from the European Commission, the leaders conveyed this request to President Trump in a joint statement. They said holding a tripartite summit on Ukraine would enhance the chances of peace following the bilateral Alaska summit last Friday between Trump and Putin. The EU leaders stated their readiness to push for a summit bringing together the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
They also emphasized that any agreement to end the war in Ukraine is primarily a Ukrainian decision, while stressing that “armed force should not be a means to change state borders.” The statement was signed by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as the Presidents of Finland and Poland. A video conference meeting is scheduled between EU leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today to discuss peace in Ukraine. The European leaders expressed appreciation for the US efforts to establish peace and end the war in Ukraine, looking forward to a solid peace agreement that guarantees vital interests for all.
