Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, stated that there is an Arab consensus that Israel’s plan goes beyond the extermination war in Gaza to an attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause, either by siege or annexation of the West Bank.
Aboul Gheit added, during a press conference following the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo on Thursday, that there is agreement on Arab action in two directions: seeking to stop the extermination war and preserving the Palestinian state project.
He pointed out that Egypt and Saudi Arabia submitted a draft resolution on Arab cooperation in the Middle East, which includes an important set of principles and foundations, explaining that the resolution summarizes the Arab position on the Palestinian cause and affirms the principle of Arab states’ sovereignty and rejects any hints of violating this sovereignty.
According to Aboul Gheit, the resolution also states that resolving the Palestinian issue based on the two-state vision is the only way to end regional tensions and move towards a new horizon of stability and prosperity.
He explained that the resolution underwent extensive discussion and was approved at the ministers’ meeting on Thursday, urging a careful reading due to its meaningful and significant clauses, one of which is “strong condemnation of any proposal that threatens the sovereignty of Arab states and the unity of their territories, with an emphasis on the necessity of working to end the occupation of Arab lands.”
He added that the resolution also includes “the impossibility of relying on the permanence of any arrangements for cooperation, integration, and coexistence among the countries of the region as long as some Arab lands remain occupied or there is a covert threat of occupation or annexation of Arab lands.”
He continued that the resolution again highlights the centrality of addressing the roots of the conflict and regional tensions, especially through a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue.
He stressed that “this decision is important” and was approved after a long working day lasting about 10 hours.
