Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met on Thursday in Cairo with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys to the Sharm El-Sheikh negotiations on peace in the Gaza Strip, whose statements sparked wide reactions.
According to a video broadcast by the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi said he was confident of reaching an agreement to stop the two-year-long war under the presence of U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, expressing hope for an immediate ceasefire.
El-Sisi added that “great appreciation goes to U.S. President Donald Trump, without whose efforts this agreement would not have been achieved,” explaining that his announcement of the necessity to stop the war was the signal that everyone seized to realize it as soon as possible.
He stressed Egypt’s support for the agreement and its readiness to move quickly to implement it as soon as possible, calling on the U.S. envoys to convince the Israelis to cease fire until the agreement is signed, in line with the “spirit of stopping the war.”
For his part, U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Stephen Witkoff said, “The past few days have been among the most valuable moments of my life, to have the opportunity to work together to do great things for the world,” hoping that “it will help save many lives and lead to lasting peace.”
Witkoff praised the Egyptian negotiation team, saying: “I would like to point out that you have an amazing team,” adding: “Without your leadership and your team’s unique skills, we would not have been able to achieve much. They demonstrated exceptional competence at critical moments.”
He added, referring to Egyptian Intelligence Chief Major General Hassan Rashad: “History books may not record the details of what happened, but without you, sir, we would not have reached this result.”
He confirmed that “what has been achieved will pave the way for a new phase in relations between Egypt and the United States,” noting “the necessity to acknowledge the partnership that took place on the ground, which enabled these negotiations to reach a successful conclusion.”
He explained that “everyone was at the same table” and that “this was a great example of the world’s ability to unite when there is will,” pointing out that “Israel was also at the table, made concessions, and it was an honor for me to witness all that.”
He confirmed that he and Jared Kushner will push Israel to immediately begin implementing the agreement, adding: “We spent the entire flight discussing it with Major General Hassan, and we invited him to join us, but he is currently tied up with other duties.”
He noted their eagerness to ensure the successful implementation of the peace plan presented by Trump and to ensure it works for the people of Gaza.
He confirmed that “President Trump is very excited to visit Egypt,” and that he is scheduled to visit next week, adding that Trump is “a remarkable man who seeks to achieve peace, reduce conflicts, and ensure people live better lives.”
For his part, Jared Kushner, senior advisor to the U.S. President, said what happened was a “major breakthrough,” and that this agreement was very important to Trump, pointing to the end of a dark chapter in the region’s history represented by the war on Gaza.
He noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer showed great flexibility in the talks, making real concessions and risks to reach this outcome.
In this context, El-Sisi made a phone call to U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, inviting him to participate in the celebration to be held in Egypt on the occasion of the signing of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, “as it is a historic agreement crowning the joint efforts of Egypt, the United States, and the mediators in the recent period.”
According to the Egyptian presidency, Trump welcomed the invitation, expressing his happiness to visit Egypt, especially as it is a country he holds in great esteem and appreciation.
