The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed on Tuesday that there are “no nuclear safety implications” after a drone collided with a cooling tower at a nuclear plant in central Russia.
Russian nuclear operator Rosenergoatom stated on the Telegram app that “a combat drone belonging to the Ukrainian Armed Forces attempted to attack a cooling tower at the Novovoronezh nuclear plant” on Monday night into Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the IAEA announced it had received information from Russia that a drone had collided with the nuclear plant.
In a post on the X platform, the IAEA reassured that the attack caused “no nuclear safety implications nor any change in radiation levels” at the site.
The post added that the agency’s director, Rafael Grossi, “reiterates the assertion that nuclear facilities should never be attacked.”
According to Rosenergoatom, the drone was “neutralized by technical means” while flying near the nuclear plant, causing the drone to explode after hitting the cooling tower.
The nuclear reactor operator confirmed that “no damage or injuries occurred,” and the plant’s operation was not affected.
