The event accompanying World Maritime Day 2025 was launched in Dubai under the slogan “Our Ocean – Our Responsibility – Our Opportunity,” organized by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It serves as a global platform bringing together senior government officials, international maritime sector leaders, industry experts, and academics from around the world to discuss key challenges and opportunities facing the shipping and maritime navigation sectors internationally.

The two-day event includes keynote speeches and in-depth panel discussions addressing pivotal issues shaping the future of oceans and maritime industries, alongside a specialized exhibition showcasing the latest innovations and initiatives in marine sustainability.

Resilience of Shipping Economies

Suheil bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said: “With the support and directives of our wise leadership, we are honored to host this important gathering that brings together leaders, experts, and pioneers of the maritime sector from around the world. Your presence today confirms our shared commitment to protecting one of our planet’s vital resources: our oceans. This year’s theme, ‘Our Ocean – Our Responsibility – Our Opportunity,’ calls for reflection on the role each of us plays in preserving marine ecosystems, ensuring the resilience of shipping and navigation economies, and harnessing innovation for a sustainable future. This theme strongly aligns with the UAE’s maritime vision.”

He added: “As part of the global maritime system, the UAE plays a pivotal role in decision-making, where international experts meet and advanced solutions and strategies are formulated to ensure economic growth with minimal environmental impact.”

Translating Efforts

Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, expressed sincere thanks to the UAE, especially the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, for organizing this distinguished event. He emphasized the need for everyone’s continued support and engagement with IMO’s work and translating efforts into positive messages.

He explained that such gatherings provide an opportunity to exchange views, share concerns, and learn from each other. He also called for continuing to amplify the voice of all IMO activities and listening to the younger generation to understand what needs to be done.

Alongside official sessions, the event featured traditional artistic performances reflecting the authentic Emirati maritime heritage, with national groups presenting works inspired by the ancestors’ sea civilization and history, symbolizing the close link between past and present and reflecting Emirati identity.

The opening also included a short film highlighting the UAE’s achievements in the maritime sector and its initiatives supporting IMO’s efforts to enhance ocean sustainability and strengthen maritime governance. This includes launching green projects and initiatives that have made the UAE a global model in sustainable maritime transport.

Following the opening session, officials toured the accompanying exhibition, which included booths from several national and international institutions showcasing the latest technical solutions and innovations in green maritime transport. Participants reviewed pioneering UAE projects in marine infrastructure development, clean energy use in ports, recycling technologies, and initiatives supporting the empowerment of national competencies in the maritime sector.

The UAE’s hosting of this global event marks a significant milestone highlighting its firm commitment to leading international efforts towards marine sustainability and consolidating its position as a key supporter of ocean protection and sustainability for future generations.
