The spokesperson for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, stated that the current authorities in Moldova refuse to hold talks with Russia and are obstructing the conflict resolution process in the Transnistria Republic.
Peskov added during a press conference in response to a question from the Russian news agency TASS about the latest developments in the region and the prospects for resolving the Transnistria issue: “The conflict resolution issue is very complicated… and with the current leadership in Moldova, it becomes extremely difficult – almost impossible – to hold any talks on this matter currently.”
He added: “This applies to the Moldovan leadership which effectively rejects any dialogue with Russia.”
It is noteworthy that Moldova held parliamentary elections on Sunday, with a turnout of 52% of registered voters. According to preliminary results announced by the Central Election Commission, after counting 99.9% of the votes, the ruling “Action and Solidarity” party retained the majority of parliamentary seats with 50.16%. The opposition objected to the results and decided to challenge them due to voter rights violations.
Russian peacekeeping forces were deployed in the armed conflict zone in Transnistria after signing an agreement with Moldova on July 21, 1992, regarding the peaceful settlement of the conflict. The Russian army currently works in cooperation with peacekeeping forces from Moldova and Transnistria to maintain stability in the region.
Moldova insists on the withdrawal of the Russian operational group and proposes replacing it with a civilian mission under international supervision.
