Syrian forces thwarted an arms smuggling operation from rural Damascus to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), while both sides engaged in clashes in the Raqqa countryside.
On Tuesday, the Syrian Interior Ministry announced the seizure and confiscation of a shipment of various weapons and ammunition in rural Damascus, which was intended for smuggling into SDF-controlled areas.
The ministry stated that the Internal Security Directorate in the Rural Damascus Governorate executed a well-planned ambush, during which they seized a shipment including RPG launchers and medium and light weapons, in addition to arresting the driver.
Investigations have begun to identify all involved parties, with plans to refer them to the judiciary and take legal action.
The ministry affirmed the security agencies’ readiness to confront attempts to destabilize the country and continue working to protect citizens and maintain state sovereignty.
Meanwhile, a correspondent for Syrian news reported that the Syrian Arab Army repelled an infiltration attempt by SDF elements across the Euphrates River in the Al-Mughla area in eastern Raqqa countryside, killing and injuring several of them.
The Syrian army also ambushed Kurdish units as part of efforts to counter their infiltration attempts into several army points east of Aleppo city (north), according to the official SANA news agency.
The agency reported that a unit of the Syrian Arab Army confronted a group of SDF elements attempting to infiltrate army positions in Tal Maaz village east of Aleppo, inflicting casualties through a precise ambush.
At that time, an unnamed government source said other SDF elements stationed in Umm Tina village and Deir Hafer city in Aleppo countryside targeted army points in Tal Maaz in an attempt to withdraw their trapped members.
The source explained that the initial clash involved light weapons, and as SDF fire continued, heavy weapons were used in response, with reinforcements called to army points in Tal Maaz.
It is worth noting that on March 10, Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shar and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi signed an agreement to integrate civilian and military institutions in northeastern Syria under state administration, including border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields, affirming the country’s territorial unity and rejecting division.
Reports indicate that the SDF violated this agreement multiple times.
