The Egyptian-Saudi relationship is characterized by a long legacy of brotherhood and mutual support, as emphasized by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in multiple statements, saying: “A short distance, and Gulf security is an integral part of Egypt’s national security.” This historically rooted relationship has been demonstrated through various key moments, including the Saudi army’s participation in all wars Egypt fought, from 1948, 1967, to 1973.
The unified Egyptian-Saudi vision on regional and international issues forms a pillar of stability in the region. Saudi Arabia has expressed pride in Egypt’s position in the Arab world, supporting it after the June 30 revolution with a $4 billion aid package to bolster Egypt’s economy.
Saudi Arabia played a crucial role during the October 1973 war by cutting oil supplies to the United States in support of Egypt. Conversely, Egypt has stood by Saudi Arabia amid campaigns aimed at tarnishing its image, especially following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, affirming its support and warning against political exploitation of the case.
The relationship extends beyond political and security coordination to include economic, investment, cultural, and educational partnerships. Trade exchange between the two countries exceeded $11 billion in the first half of 2024, marking a 38% growth compared to the previous year, with Saudi Arabia ranking as Egypt’s second-largest global trading partner.
The Egyptian-Saudi Coordination Council, established by President El-Sisi and King Salman, has signed 17 agreements outlining economic cooperation in housing, petroleum, education, agriculture, and health. These include the development of Kasr Al-Ainy Hospital, financing the West Cairo power plant, and new projects in Sinai such as King Salman International University and agricultural clusters.
