Although the suffocating political crisis currently gripping France is purely an internal matter, political and media circles in Paris insist on involving Algeria in their discussions every time, leading to the belief that the French elites are convinced that the unprecedented crisis with Algeria has cast a shadow over the French domestic scene and complicated the situation further.
This scene is summarized by a provocative headline in the French right-wing magazine “Marianne” on its website last Thursday, while addressing an article about the world’s view of France amid the unprecedented political crisis. The magazine wrote under the title: “Poor France! A pitiful scene: French political chaos as seen from Algeria, or Russia, or China.” The headline reveals the level of interest in Algeria, placing it alongside China and Russia!
Another media outlet of the same current, the weekly “Le Point,” also demonstrated the extent of interest that the French, or at least some of them, pay to the position of Algerian elites regarding what France has been experiencing in recent weeks of political turmoil resembling what the French experienced at the end of the 1950s decade, when the Fourth French Republic fell under the blows of the liberation revolution.
The magazine presented a review of how Algerian media dealt with the crisis in France under the title: “Water is leaking into France’s ‘Titanic’: The political crisis from Algeria’s perspective.” Notably, the magazine reviewed an article from “Echorouk” published last week, which touched on the early electoral rhetoric of former Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau during the upcoming presidential elections, which revolves around targeting Algeria, its community, and interests, based on recent press statements he made.
The same magazine quoted excerpts from an article published in the government daily “El Moudjahid” on Thursday, the 9th of this month, titled: “The Lecornu government lasted only 14 hours: A political earthquake in France.” It wrote: “Thus, three governments immersed themselves in a tense and sterile debate in just over a year, while France continues to sink and cause concern among its European partners.”
In a talk show on the far-right French channel “CNews,” broadcast from Wednesday night to Thursday, dedicated to the role of French President Emmanuel Macron in the crisis engulfing France, the program host, Gautier Loubery, held the Élysée Palace master responsible for the situation of the Fifth Republic, which has become threatened with collapse at any moment due to Macron’s insistence on clinging to the presidency despite his failure to form a government.
While Loubery was questioning guests, he insisted on involving Algeria in the crisis his country is experiencing, saying that Macron weakened France’s position as a global power due to his failure to manage the Russian-Ukrainian war file, as well as the Middle East crisis, referring to the Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip. The French journalist also said Macron failed in managing the crisis with Algeria.
Earlier, French Interior Minister in the fallen François Bayrou government, Bruno Retailleau, hinted that among the reasons that led to the collapse of government formation negotiations by the recently resigned Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was the failure to assign the visa file to the Interior Ministry. This issue exploded after the French Foreign Ministry, through its arm “Campus France,” revealed the increase in the number of visas granted to Algerian students, in a stance that challenged the Interior Minister who repeatedly advocated for zero visas for Algerians.
