MP Dr. Maryam Al-Dhaen praised the efforts of the Ministry of Education in providing healthy meals and foods for school students, affirming that this step aligns with the earlier proposal she submitted regarding establishing a national strategy for proper nutrition and sustainable physical activity, which was approved to promote public health and disease prevention.

Al-Dhaen confirmed that the support of Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education, and his personal interest in following up on implementing these national directions reflects the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to modern health standards and its keenness to integrate efforts among various government agencies.

She explained that in August 2023, she submitted a proposal to provide healthy meals in schools, noting that proper nutrition is a fundamental pillar for healthy and sound child growth, as it contributes to improving their concentration levels in classrooms and directly impacts their mental and academic abilities. Providing healthy meals in schools is a long-term investment in the future of generations.

She added that this initiative is a practical application of the principle “prevention is better than cure,” as it helps reduce the spread of obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart diseases by habituating students to balanced dietary patterns from an early age, enhancing the chances of building a healthier and more productive society.

Al-Dhaen pointed out that investing in students’ health is investing in human capital, which is the fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development. She highlighted the importance of continuous awareness and education about the basics of proper nutrition and physical activity within schools, ensuring these values are instilled as a lifestyle for students and enhancing Bahrain’s position as a leading model in caring for the health and welfare of the youth.
