Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its firm principles and humanitarian stances regarding refugee issues and the international humanitarian response.

This was stated in a speech delivered by the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khathila, during the 76th Executive Committee meeting of the UNHCR. Ambassador bin Khathila explained that the Kingdom continues its steadfast commitment to the principles of international protection and burden sharing, noting that Saudi Arabia has maintained its generous contributions despite global economic challenges, reflecting its ongoing dedication to supporting international humanitarian efforts.

He pointed out that the Kingdom places great importance on the interconnected approach between humanitarian and developmental work, based on the belief that sustainable solutions require, alongside humanitarian response, developmental efforts that address the root causes of displacement. He also mentioned that Saudi Arabia adopts an integrated foreign policy approach combining addressing the causes of displacement through mediation and conflict resolution with providing humanitarian and developmental aid to enhance resilience. He stressed the necessity of effectively involving refugee-hosting countries in decision-making and policy formulation, especially regarding humanitarian financing, to ensure a fairer and more effective response.

In a related context, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khathila called for intensified efforts to respond to humanitarian needs in Sudan and alleviate civilian suffering. He also reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at immediately ending the war in Gaza and reaching a comprehensive agreement that guarantees unrestricted humanitarian aid delivery and prevents the displacement of the Palestinian people.

The Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organizations concluded the statement by affirming Saudi Arabia’s continued support for Syria in facing economic and developmental challenges and supporting efforts for the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees.
