Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the recent events in Georgia aimed to “achieve the Ukrainian Maidan scenario” relying on “forces from outside the region.”

Zakharova said during a press conference on Wednesday: “It is clear that the goal of the failed provocation is to realize the Maidan scenario in Georgia, establish a puppet government, fully subject the republic to the will of the West, and entrench anti-Russian positions there, all for the purpose of using Georgia for new adventures against our country and destabilizing Russia’s southern borders.”

She pointed out that those behind these events “ignore the interests of the Georgian people.”

She confirmed, “We oppose turning the region into a new arena of sharp confrontation. It is clear that such a negative scenario is only of interest to the aforementioned forces from outside the region, who seek to achieve their narrow interests only.”

It is worth noting that Georgia experienced a wave of protests during local elections on Saturday, October 4. Clashes occurred between police and protesters during the demonstrations.

Protesters attempted to storm the residence of Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili. Security forces used pepper spray against them. Several participants in the storming of the presidential residence were arrested. The Georgian court decided to detain five of them pending investigation on Tuesday.
