The US State Department announced on Wednesday that it had dismissed an American diplomat after he admitted to a romantic relationship with a Chinese woman allegedly connected to the Chinese Communist Party.
This dismissal is believed to be the first of its kind following a ban on such relationships implemented late last year under former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Earlier this year, the Associated Press reported that the State Department had imposed, in the final days of Biden’s presidency, a ban on all US government employees in China, their family members, and contractors with security clearances from any romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese nationals.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Bejot said in a statement that the diplomat was dismissed from the foreign service after President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reviewed the case and decided that he “admitted to concealing a romantic relationship with a Chinese national known to have ties to the Chinese Communist Party.”
Bejot added, “Under Secretary Rubio’s leadership, we will continue a policy of zero tolerance for any employee caught undermining our nation’s national security.”
The statement did not name the diplomat, but he and his partner appeared in a secretly recorded video posted online by a conservative activist.
