Traditional crafts and popular artifacts in Ajloun form an essential part of the cultural identity and contribute to boosting domestic tourism by showcasing the Ajloun mahbash and heritage pieces in local museums.
The Director of Culture in Ajloun Governorate said that the directorate works to support traditional crafts by providing training and workshops for workers, emphasizing the importance of preserving handicrafts and passing them on to future generations to enhance cultural and tourism awareness in the region.
The founder of the Jordanian Mahbash House, Samer Freihat, said his passion for making the mahbash started from his love for Jordanian heritage, explaining that the mahbash is not just a piece of wood but reflects the symbolism of generosity, kindness, strength, and dignity.
He added that making the mahbash begins with obtaining wood from the Ministry of Agriculture or farmers, often from walnut or apricot trees, which is stored in a dark place for up to two years to ensure its dryness and stability.
Freihat pointed out that the materials used in decoration are entirely natural, such as walnut shells, pomegranate, and henna, stressing that the Jordanian mahbash is registered with the Ministry of Tourism as an authentic national heritage product with instructions for its preservation, such as oiling it and keeping it away from sun and moisture.
He added that the traditional Ajloun mahbash consists of a hollow wooden body and a long handle used to grind coffee after roasting, and the sound produced by pounding it is part of social rituals reflecting hospitality and generosity values.
The owner of Rasoun Popular Heritage Museum, Mohammad Al-Shara, said he converted a large part of his home in the town of Rasoun to display thousands of rural and heritage pieces from Ajloun that he collected to embody the nature of life in the governorate over periods spanning more than 150 years.
He explained that the museum’s goal is to activate tourism and economic movement, especially since the Rasoun area is located within tourist routes and adds value benefiting the nearby Ajloun Forest Reserve, which is rich in nature.
