Ahmed Sahraoui, member of Algeria’s permanent mission to the United Nations, affirmed that establishing an independent Palestinian state is the only path to peace and the key to stability in the Middle East region.

In Algeria’s speech during the UN Security Council session on the situation in Palestine, the Algerian ambassador said the solution is clear and can no longer tolerate further procrastination: establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, a position agreed upon by the international community for decades and now time to implement.

He added that the recent momentum in the Palestinian cause, with successive recognitions and initiatives calling for a just and lasting solution, will remain insufficient unless it moves from rhetoric to action, from begging to obligation, and from persuasion to sanctions.

The Algerian ambassador called on the international community to act to enable the Palestinian people to exercise their natural and legal right to their land and establish their state, warning that continued genocide and forced displacement will lead to the disappearance of the Palestinian people, while annexation and settlement will result in the loss of the land on which the Palestinian state is supposed to be established.

He said Algeria looks forward to the ongoing negotiations, expressing hope that they will lead to a positive outcome that ends the Palestinian tragedy and stops the aggression.

He stressed the necessity for the international community to ensure the full implementation of any outcomes to avoid repeating past mistakes that led to unfulfilled commitments and agreements violated by the Israeli occupation.

Sahraoui confirmed that any agreement must be based on and aim to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
