Sleep disorders are common health issues affecting many people, leading to numerous consequences on mental health, quality of life, and overall health. Experts confirm that they threaten mental, psychological, and physical health, increasing the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and weakening the immune system. Additionally, they raise the risk of anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating, impacting daily performance. According to Dr. Celine Baaklini, a specialist in pulmonary intensive care at the ‘Belvedere’ Medical Center, sleep disorders include insomnia, difficulty falling asleep at night, waking up during the night, and inability to return to sleep. These disorders can stem from psychological or physiological causes. Some people sleep only a few hours and cannot extend sleep duration as recommended. Among sleep disorders is sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea occurs when all body muscles relax during sleep, including the tongue, which falls back causing breathing interruption. The person then feels an urgent need to get up to avoid suffocation. As a result, daytime fatigue, concentration problems, continuous sleepiness, and the need to nap during the day occur. Those affected often have weight gain or obesity, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases since this condition produces free radicals that negatively affect heart health. Therefore, patients with sleep apnea are advised to check their heart health and reduce weight if obesity is present, as obesity is a risk factor linked to sleep apnea.
