The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” reported that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni intends to propose an initiative to send Italian engineering units to participate in mine clearance in Gaza.

The newspaper stated that Meloni, who will present her plans regarding Gaza to the White House and the media, seeks to provide Italian support in managing the sector, participating in stabilization and reconstruction efforts.

It noted that the idea of involving Italian engineering forces in mine clearance in Gaza is a complex and risky operation, which will be entrusted to specialized military engineering units.

The Italian cabinet is currently reviewing conditions related to the possibility of sending units from the Carabinieri forces to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict area, with this team expected to include about two hundred personnel who will train and accompany future Palestinian security forces.

According to the initial plan, training could begin in the city of Jericho in the West Bank, but Israeli army control of the area and the tense security situation make the project’s implementation there unlikely at present.

The Italian government proposed an alternative to use the training center in the Italian city of Vicenza, where the Carabinieri have experience training foreign recruits and can receive the first Palestinian groups there.

Regarding the possibility of Carabinieri participation inside the Gaza Strip, Italian authorities clarified that this option is not excluded but will only be implemented at a later stage after the deployment of peacekeeping forces from Arab or Islamic countries in the area.

In a related context, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to implement the first phase of the peace plan to resolve the Gaza conflict.

The first phase includes Hamas releasing Israeli hostages in exchange for Israel withdrawing to agreed lines within the sector and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including many serving life sentences on terrorism charges.

Trump had announced on September 29 his plan, which includes twenty points, featuring an immediate ceasefire conditional on the release of hostages within seventy-two hours. The plan also stipulates that Hamas and other Palestinian factions will not participate in managing the sector directly or indirectly, with administration transferring to a technocratic authority operating under international supervision led by Trump himself.
