The Iranian Mizan news agency, the judiciary’s spokesperson, stated that the accused “worked for Mossad on sensitive communications projects” and provided information about “import routes of electronic devices,” and managed to access “sovereign databases” related to citizens, infrastructure, and government institutions.

The execution of Chubyasel comes as part of a series of punitive measures implemented by the Islamic Republic following its war with Israel and after the United Nations decided to reimpose sanctions on Tehran due to its nuclear program.

Since the outbreak of the war, Tehran has executed nine people on charges of spying for Israel, the latest being Babak Shahbazi, whom Iranian authorities accused of espionage.

However, the Associated Press quoted human rights activists saying that Shahbazi was subjected to torture and forced confession after writing a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offering to fight alongside Kyiv.

According to the Iran Human Rights organization, based in Oslo, and the Abdol-Rahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in the Islamic Republic, the number of executions in 2025 has exceeded 1,000 people. The two organizations noted that the actual number might be higher, as Iranian authorities do not announce every execution they carry out.
