Revenues from the tax on dog ownership in Germany reached a new record level of about 430 million euros in 2024, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office.
The office explained yesterday in Wiesbaden that this amount represents an increase of 2.2% compared to the previous year, noting that revenues from the dog tax have continued to rise over the past 10 years, increasing by about 39% compared to 2014.
However, the increase in revenues does not necessarily mean more dogs, as the office pointed out that the tax amount and conditions vary from municipality to municipality, often depending on the number of dogs in the household or the breed of the animal.
In addition to taxes, the cost of feeding pets has become an additional burden on owners; prices for dog and cat food rose on average by 2.3% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Comparing prices to 2020, it is clear that dog and cat food prices increased by more than one-third (35.3%), while the general consumer price increase during the same period did not exceed 19.3%.
