The Spanish government announced on Monday a plan worth 34.5 million euros dedicated to rehabilitating and revitalizing areas affected by the summer wildfires.

Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, clarified after her meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, that a budget of 24 million euros will be allocated to rehabilitate natural spaces, especially renewing watercourses and preventing erosion.

Additionally, a financial envelope of 10.5 million euros has been allocated to fund the activities of the hydrographic unions of the Tagus, Douro, and Minho-Sil rivers, aiming to protect water resources from the consequences of the fires.

The minister called for a national consensus on the “National Climate Pact,” recalling Spain’s particular vulnerability to extreme weather events.

For his part, Planas described the meeting as a “preparatory discussion” for the national pact on the climate emergency, emphasizing the urgent need to act and adapt the food industry sector sustainably, in addition to managing territorial planning.
