The city of Irbid is witnessing coordinated activity in preparation for the 2026 winter season. A meeting was chaired by the Governor of Irbid, Radwan Al-Atoum, attended by the Chairman of the Greater Irbid Municipality Committee, Emad Al-Azzam, emphasizing intensified efforts to address obstacles and problems the city faced in previous years.
Governor Al-Atoum stressed the necessity of cleaning valleys and maintaining rainwater drainage inlets, enhancing work before the arrival of weather depressions, and addressing all previous challenges.
Emergency plans in rain-affected areas of the governorate were followed up, with meetings held with some committee heads.
Emad Al-Azzam confirmed that municipal crews are “racing against time” to complete vital maintenance and development work before winter. He pointed out that the current network condition is “weak,” requiring urgent intervention, with some parts needing intensive maintenance and others complete replacement and modernization. He announced the allocation of 700,000 Jordanian Dinars for comprehensive maintenance and development of rainwater drainage networks across the city. A central emergency room has been prepared in the Directorate of Implementation and Maintenance, with 27 emergency teams working in three shifts (morning, evening, night), equipped with more than 60 vehicles and equipment to face any emergency. Additionally, three shelter centers have been prepared in Bushra, Hour, and Irbid Emaar Park.
The municipality has already studied all hot spots where water accumulates and started working on solutions, including cleaning, maintenance, and replacement of old and damaged rainwater drainage networks as part of its expansion plan to reduce water accumulation in streets.
The Chairman of Ramtha Municipality Committee, Engineer Jamal Abu Obeid, confirmed the municipality’s early preparations for the rainy season and winter as part of its annual plan to ensure citizens’ safety and protect public and private properties. The municipality conducted precise monitoring of areas with previous water accumulation and promptly addressed these sites to ensure water flow.
To enhance infrastructure, Abu Obeid noted that the municipality issued a tender worth 70,000 JOD to maintain and replace some old rainwater drainage networks to improve drainage efficiency across the district. An integrated emergency plan was also prepared, with emergency teams deployed throughout the district once rain starts, equipped logistically and connected via a unified communication device to ensure quick coordination and response.
Similarly, the Chairman of Tabaqat Fahl Municipality Committee, Engineer Hamza Al-Momani, stated that the municipality completed early preparations for the winter season amid expectations of increased rainfall in the Northern Jordan Valley district, requiring maximum readiness to deal with floods and water drainage. The municipality teams thoroughly cleaned valleys and flood channels and cleared rainwater outlets to ensure smooth water flow and prevent possible floods.
To strengthen drainage infrastructure, the municipality announced a tender worth 75,000 JOD for maintenance and rehabilitation of rainwater drainage lines and networks within the municipality’s boundaries. The goal is to protect public and private properties, ensure citizens’ safety, and maintain smooth traffic flow during upcoming weather depressions.
The New Mazar Municipality announced its full readiness for the winter season, emphasizing high preparedness to deal with heavy rainfall and occasional snowfall. The municipality chairman, Engineer Mahdi Nasir, said the municipality identified “hot spots” where rainwater usually accumulates and took proactive measures including thorough cleaning of culverts and valleys to ensure water flow and prevent flooding. Warnings were issued to residents in valleys and low-lying areas prone to floods, urging maximum caution and cooperation with emergency teams.
The Chairwoman of Khalid Bin Al-Walid Municipality Committee, Engineer Rawya Al-Gharaibeh, confirmed that the municipality has mobilized all human and mechanical resources to ensure the highest readiness levels to handle any emergencies resulting from expected weather conditions. She emphasized direct and continuous coordination with the municipality’s operations room. The municipality opened a main emergency operations room at the municipal center and subsidiary rooms in different areas, activated a GPS-based application for mobile machinery, and trained municipal crews to regularly clean culverts and channels before and during winter to ensure smooth rainwater drainage and prevent flooding of homes and road closures. Warning and guidance signs were placed in dangerous areas and around potholes.
