The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against pro-Palestinian organizations and protesters, accusing them of intimidating Jewish worshippers at a synagogue in New Jersey.
The lawsuit is based on the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, a law enacted in 1994 to prevent the use of force or physical obstruction against individuals at reproductive health care centers or places of worship.
According to the complaint filed Monday in the federal court of New Jersey, November protests against an event at a synagogue in West Orange escalated into violence.
The complaint alleges that protesters assaulted some worshippers and used chants and plastic vuvuzelas to disrupt the event.
This case is the first of its kind to use the FACE Act to accuse protesters of interfering with religious worship, according to Harmit Dillon, head of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, appointed by President Donald Trump.
At a press conference, Dillon affirmed, “We will no longer tolerate attacks on places of worship in the United States.”
This move is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to curb protests in the U.S. against Israeli military operations in Gaza, as the administration cut funding to universities and seeks to deport some pro-Palestinian activists on charges of anti-Semitism.
The department has also reduced the use of the FACE Act in abortion-related cases, considering previous prosecutions as improper political use of the law, but these restrictions do not apply to cases involving places of worship. In January, Trump pardoned several individuals convicted under this law.
The civil lawsuit in New Jersey targets the “Socialist Party and Liberation” and “Muslims for Palestine” organizations in New Jersey and seeks a court injunction.
