European leaders confirmed yesterday that Moscow “cannot enjoy” a veto right over Ukraine’s accession to the European Union or NATO, following the summit held between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
They added in a statement signed by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and other European leaders: “Ukraine will have to make decisions related to its territories.”
Von der Leyen said in a post on the “X” platform yesterday that “strong security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe are necessary for any peace agreement that ends the war in Ukraine.”
She wrote in the post: “The European Union is working closely with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the United States to reach a just and lasting peace. Strong security guarantees that protect the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe are necessary.”
