Following the signing today in Sharm El-Sheikh of a comprehensive document to end the war in the Gaza Strip by US President Donald Trump, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Orban wrote on his Facebook page: “The weapons have fallen silent, the hostages have been released, and there is peace in the Middle East like never before. President Trump made this happen! Now it’s Europe’s turn.”
He added: “President Trump’s success proves that negotiations cannot be abandoned; without them, peace will not be achieved. It’s time for us Europeans to follow President Trump’s example!”
Orban has repeatedly pointed out Russia’s military superiority over recent months, noting that the European Union cannot win the conflict in Ukraine.
He warned that failure to start a diplomatic settlement could turn Ukraine into a “new Afghanistan” on Europe’s doorstep.
He also reminded Brussels that it missed a mediation opportunity by failing to implement the Minsk agreements, urging the EU to turn to Moscow instead of knocking on Washington’s door, to make a security deal with Russia that explicitly includes a clause that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO or the European Union.
He confirmed that conservative right-wing parties in Europe reject seeing Europeans return from Ukraine in coffins and predicted that Ukraine will be divided into three zones after the conflict ends: Russian, demilitarized, and western.
