Spanish forward Ansu Fati, on loan at French club Monaco from Barcelona, will play on Wednesday against Manchester City in the second round of the UEFA Champions League at the Louis II Stadium following a humiliating 3-1 defeat on Sunday against newly promoted Ligue 1 side Lorient, leaving Monaco third in the table with 12 points.
Fati (22), who scored Monaco’s only goal against Lorient from a penalty, aiming to score against opponents for the third consecutive match, raising his tally to 4 goals, believes he knows how to score against Manchester City despite having scored only two goals with Brighton where he played on loan, including a goal in the 2-1 defeat against City at the Etihad Stadium.
City won 4-0 away against Brighton in the 2023-2024 Premier League season when Fati was on the bench and did not play. Later, on October 21, 2023, Fati scored against substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega at the Etihad after coming on as a substitute in the 66th minute for João Pedro, now a Chelsea star. However, his goal did not prevent Brighton’s loss as Julian Alvarez, now an Atlético Madrid star, and City top scorer Haaland scored.
The report described Manchester City as a terrifying opponent and much higher level than Belgian Club Brugge, who defeated Monaco 4-1 in the first round of the Champions League. Monaco’s Austrian coach, Adi Hütter, is keen to protect the La Masia graduate due to his frequent injuries, so he only fields him late in matches, as happened against Club Brugge when he was brought on in the 63rd minute, in the 5-2 home win over Metz in the 46th minute where he scored twice, and in the 65th minute in the loss against Lorient.
This time, Fati will not face Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson or Ortega but the world’s best goalkeeper, Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is familiar with French football from playing with European champion and Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain. City’s attack will aim to settle the match early before Fati even comes off the bench.
