The Deputy Governor of Antikan district, Mr. Al-Hussein Ould Hidala, held a meeting today at the municipality building with a caravan from the Senegal River Basin Development Organization, headed by the Regional Infrastructure Director, Mr. Ahmed Ramadan Sila, as part of an awareness campaign about flood risks.

The Head of the Irrigation Department at the National Cell of the Senegal River Basin Development Organization, Mr. Ahmed Ould Al-Wafi, explained that this caravan aims to raise awareness among residents of the districts adjacent to the riverbank, especially after last year’s floods in the Rosso and Antikan districts, which caused significant property damage without human casualties.

Ould Al-Wafi pointed out that current forecasts indicate an excess water level, especially in the upper river areas, which may cause limited flooding, emphasizing that these data remain predictions that may change. He added that the caravan aims to present maps identifying risk areas, explain how to read and deal with them, as well as clarify water levels, their dangers, and necessary preventive measures.

He confirmed that data from measurement stations between the Manantali and Diama dams currently indicate no immediate danger, and that the campaign is a precaution to avoid a repeat of last year’s events.

The Trarza region was chosen as the starting point for the campaign due to its economic and social importance and its greater exposure to rising water levels because of its geographical location in the river delta, where economic activities are concentrated. The caravan will continue its work to cover the three regions located along the riverbank.

After the meeting, the caravan, accompanied by the head of the administrative center of Lekseiba 2, visited the Bazoul Al-Rahma settlement recently approved by the Council of Ministers, which includes some families affected by last year’s floods.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Antikan municipality, along with administrative and security authorities in the district.
