Journalist Akram Al-Qassas described the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit as a “major leap, almost like magic” after two years of a war he called the “losers’ war,” emphasizing that none of the conflict parties achieved their military objectives, while the people of Gaza paid the highest price.
Al-Qassas explained in an interview on Extra News channel that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to achieve his declared goals of eliminating factions or recovering prisoners through the war, while Palestinian factions were unable to gain tangible field achievements, making the continuation of the conflict politically and humanly futile.
Al-Qassas pointed out that the plan of US President Donald Trump, which included Egyptian proposals and provisions, goes beyond just stopping the war, as it laid out a comprehensive roadmap including security and political arrangements after the ceasefire.
He added that Egypt seeks the agreement to be within a UN framework with the presence of an international peacekeeping force, which President Trump proposed during his presentation of the plan, noting that the upcoming phase will witness extensive discussions on managing the Gaza Strip through a technocratic government and unifying Palestinian factions, issues Cairo has been working on since the Cairo Conference in November 2023.
Al-Qassas concluded by referring to the large international and media momentum witnessed in the international conference hall in Sharm El-Sheikh, where more than 31 world leaders and heads of governments participated, in a day described by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as a “historic turning point that will close a painful chapter in human history.”
