The Australian government announced on Tuesday it will expel the Iranian ambassador along with three other Iranian diplomats within seven days, holding Tehran responsible for two anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. At the same time, Australia suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated in a press conference that Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other diplomats must leave the country within a week. This marks the first time Australia has requested an ambassador’s departure since World War II. French news channel France 24 reported an increase in anti-Semitic vandalism in Australia, including damage and arson targeting Jewish homes, schools, synagogues, and vehicles. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned these unusual and serious acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign state on Australian soil, calling them attempts to undermine social cohesion and sow discord.
Albanese added that Australian embassy staff in Tehran were safely relocated to a third country and announced that the Australian government will list the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
