The Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority revealed common risks and protective factors that affect and enhance children’s mental health, which is influenced by a complex mix of factors.

Some individual, family, and community characteristics can help provide a positive environment for mental health and reduce these risks and problems. The authority confirmed that some traits a child possesses may increase the likelihood of mental health disorders, but the child is never responsible for the challenges they face.

Risk Factors

The authority explained that risk factors in society include social and economic inequality, social stigma and discrimination, lack of access to support services, environmental pressures, and absence of a supportive network. Protective factors include a tolerant environment, safe and supportive neighborhoods, strong social networks, and availability of community services.

School Environment

In the school environment, risks include bullying, social isolation, negative teacher-student relationships, and limited access to support services. Protective factors include anti-bullying programs, peer support, positive teacher-student relationships, a positive school environment, and access to support services.

The authority indicated that the family is a fundamental factor, including family discord, such as divorce, domestic violence, mental health and substance abuse issues, trauma, and social and economic instability. Protective factors include family harmony and stability, positive parenting practices, and parental involvement.
